Eyewitnesses in the small town of Kecksburg, about 50 kilometers southeast of Pittsburgh , reported that they saw something great in the woods. A boy saw the object land, his mother saw the blue smoke rising from the woods and contacted police. Others from Kecksburg, including a volunteer fire fighter from the local fire station, reported that it found an object that looked like an acorn and had roughly the same size as a Volkswagen Beetle . Eyewitnesses also reported that a large number of military personnel were present, mostly from the U.S. army, which secured the area, were civilians from the area, and then moved it from the site on a flat bed truck. The official explanation of eldklotet was that it was a medium-sized meteor. Speculation about what the object was varied from being an alien craft to be a part of the unmanned Soviet Venera 4 from the Soviet Union , also known as Cosmos -96.
